Course Summary
Maths is the most popular A Level chosen in the country, and with good reason – it demonstrates a willingness to work hard, a dedication to precision and a commitment to improve analytical and quantitative skills. Maths helps scholars make sense of the world around them - not just in terms of numbers but also in more complex arenas: algebra, geometry, statistics, probability and mechanics. Mathematical knowledge enables deeper understanding in many more subjects – especially the sciences.
Course Details
Maths A Level is the most sought after A Level amongst employers and universities. If you are considering studying for a degree in Science, Medicine, Computing, Economics or Engineering at a top university, you must seriously consider choosing Maths A Level. Many top universities will not consider applications for quantitative degrees if they do not contain Maths A Level. Mercia Collegiate Sixth Form also offers Further Mathematics at A Level for those developing even more of a passion for the subject and aiming for the very top university places in maths or other quantitative subjects such as the sciences.
How will it be delivered and assessed?
Exam Board: Edexcel
The course has three main components: Pure, Statistics and Mechanics. The Pure Maths component builds on much of Key Stage 4 maths, in particular Algebra and its links with Geometry. You will also learn Calculus, one of the most profound of all mathematical discoveries.
The Statistics component will equip scholars with the tools needed to interpret data as well as learning new approaches to probability. The Mechanics component covers the modelling of physical events mathematically. Assessment is through three two-hour papers at the end of Year 13: Papers 1 and 2 cover the Pure content. Paper 3 covers the Statistics and Mechanics content. If Further Maths is taken, this develops further understanding of both pure and applied areas of maths, for example imaginary numbers, matrix algebra, as well as further statistics and mechanics.
Entry requirements
At least a grade 7 in GCSE Mathematics
Your next steps...
Scholars can study Maths with any subject they enjoy although studying Maths will support you in studying for other sciences, particularly Physics. Further Maths will generally be chosen as a fourth A Level.
