Course Summary

Chemistry is a versatile subject that develops many important skills which are valued and recognised by both potential employers and universities.

A Level Chemistry scholars develop their ability to think analytically and spot patterns, they learn to visualise complex processes and manipulate mathematical equations.

Through practical work scholars learn to relate the phenomena they observe to the underlying concepts and they develop their knowledge to explain these complex ideas clearly and concisely.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

Exam Board: AQA

The AQA A Level Chemistry specification is divided into three sections; • Physical Chemistry – the study of the physical structure of chemical compounds. Exploring how chemicals react with one another and the bonds that hold them together. • Inorganic Chemistry – the properties and behaviour of inorganic compounds, which include metals, minerals, and organometallic compounds. • Organic Chemistry – the branch of chemistry that studies the structure, properties and reactions of organic compounds, which contain carbon.

The course is assessed through three written exams. These assess all areas of the course including practical skills through multiple choice, short, and long answer questions.

Entry requirements

A grade 7 in Chemistry GCSE or at least a Grade 7,7 in Combined Science is required

We welcome applications for A Level Chemistry from those who have not studied separate sciences, known as triple science, at GCSE level. Any offer made to a candidate who has not studied separate sciences will be conditional on them completing additional work set by Mercia Collegiate Sixth Form before the course commences

Your next steps...

Chemistry is often referred to as a central science as it combines Physics, Biology, Mathematics, and Medicine. A combination of Chemistry with Biology and/or Physics is a popular choice for those who wish to study a Science subject at degree level.

The Chemistry course requires strong mathematical ability, so consideration of Mathematics A Level would be beneficial.
