Course Summary
The Cyber Extended Project Qualification (CyberEPQ) is a nationally recognised Level 3 qualification worth up to 28 UCAS points (equivalent to an AS Level). It gives students the opportunity to explore the rapidly growing field of cyber security and develop specialist skills that are highly valued by universities and employers.
The CyberEPQ allows students to apply their learning to a topic that personally interests them — such as digital forensics, ethical hacking, cyber defence, or online privacy. It can be completed alongside other qualifications and fits flexibly around a student’s timetable.
On completion, students gain not only UCAS points but also recognised entry to the Chartered Institute of Information Security (CIISec), providing professional status and a strong advantage when applying for degree courses, higher apprenticeships, or employment in the cyber security and technology sectors.

How will it be delivered and assessed?
The CyberEPQ is assessed through a combination of coursework and independent project work rather than traditional exams. Students complete an individual research project on a cyber security topic of their choice, producing a written report of around 5,000 words supported by evidence of research, planning, and evaluation. Assessment also includes a presentation where students explain and defend their findings to demonstrate understanding and critical thinking. The project is internally assessed and externally moderated, ensuring that standards are consistent nationally. This method of assessment rewards independent learning, research, and project management skills — essential for success in both higher education and the cyber industry.

Progression Routes
The CyberEPQ provides an excellent foundation for further study and careers in the rapidly expanding field of cyber security and digital technology. It supports progression to university degrees in Computer Science, Cyber Security, Digital Forensics, Information Technology, Artificial Intelligence, and Data Science, including courses at Russell Group universities.
Students can also progress into higher or degree apprenticeships in areas such as Cyber Security Analysis, Network Engineering, or Digital Solutions, gaining valuable industry experience while continuing their studies.
The qualification is highly regarded by employers, especially as it includes professional recognition through entry to the Chartered Institute of Information Security (CIISec). This provides students with a clear pathway into careers such as Cyber Security Analyst, Penetration Tester, Systems Architect, or IT Project Manager, making the CyberEPQ a strong stepping stone towards roles that protect and shape the digital world.
