Course Summary

A Level Geography explores the relationships between people, places, and the environment, helping you understand the world’s most pressing challenges — from climate change and globalisation to urban growth and resource management. It’s an ideal subject for students who enjoy discussion, analysis, and fieldwork, and who want to make sense of how our planet works.

Course Details

You’ll study both physical and human geography, with topics including:

Physical Geography: water and carbon cycles, coastal or glacial landscapes, and natural hazards such as earthquakes and volcanic activity.

Human Geography: global systems and governance, changing places, and population and urban issues.

You’ll also carry out an independent fieldwork investigation, where you design your own research question, collect data, and produce a written report — an excellent preparation for university-level study. This A Level builds valuable skills in data analysis, research, and critical thinking, and is highly regarded for university courses and careers in environmental science, urban planning, sustainability, international development, and geospatial technologies.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

At UTC Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park, A Level Geography (AQA) is delivered through a combination of classroom learning, fieldwork, independent research, and data analysis. Lessons focus on developing students’ understanding of the interactions between people, places, and the environment, using real-world case studies and contemporary global issues. Students take part in fieldwork activities that allow them to apply geographical theory to practical investigation and strengthen their analytical and research skills.

Assessment is through two written examinations and an independent investigation. The exams, taken at the end of Year 13, assess both physical and human geography, including data response and essay-style questions. The independent investigation (Non-Exam Assessment) makes up 20% of the final grade and involves designing and conducting a piece of original fieldwork research, analysing data, and producing a written report of 3,000–4,000 words. This blend of exams and coursework ensures students develop a wide range of transferable skills valued by universities and employers.
