Course Summary
Why Study Mathematics?
Mathematics at this level consists of the study of
re Mathematics and the study of the application of mathematics to the physical world such as Mechanics and Statistics.
Maths is a facilitating subject, which means that it will support the study of many other subjects including Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Computing, and Psychology. It will also support progression to many competitive careers.
Course Details
A Level Mathematics (Pearson Edexcel) is a Level 3 qualification that develops strong problem-solving, logical reasoning, and analytical skills — all highly valued in further study and employment.
The course builds on key topics from GCSE such as algebra, trigonometry, and probability, while also introducing exciting new areas including calculus, logarithms, and hypothesis testing.
The course is divided into three compulsory sections:
Pure Mathematics – develops your understanding of core mathematical principles such as algebra, geometry, and calculus.
Mechanics – explores the mathematics of motion and forces, applying maths to real-world physical problems.
Statistics – teaches you how to collect, analyse, and interpret data, including using probability and hypothesis testing.
Assessment:
Assessment is through three written exam papers at the end of Year 13, each testing your understanding of the pure, mechanics, and statistics content.
A Level Maths is an essential subject for many university courses and careers, particularly in engineering, computer science, physics, economics
How will it be delivered and assessed?
At UTC Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park, Mathematics is delivered through a combination of classroom teaching, problem-solving activities, and applied mathematical investigations. Students are encouraged to develop both their theoretical understanding and practical application of mathematical concepts, supported by regular feedback and targeted support sessions.
The AS Mathematics course is studied over one year and is assessed by two written examinations at the end of Year 12. The full A Level Mathematics qualification is completed over two years and is assessed by three written examinations at the end of Year 13. In addition to formal exams, students are internally assessed through project work and ongoing assessments to monitor progress and build confidence across the areas of Pure Mathematics, Mechanics, and Statistics.
Entry requirements
For A Level Mathematics at least a strong Grade 6 in Mathematics is required at GCSE.
